Java

Saphira Linux javaDragon

Java development on Saphira with proper support: apk add openjdk17 installs OpenJDK 17 (17.0.17_p10-r2) with the headless JRE, and Gradle drives builds alongside the Android tools. Saphira is the development machine; the agent, if you use one, is a tool you point at your code.

Available now from the hatched repository: apk add openjdk17

javaDragon is the part of Saphira that treats the machine as a first-class Java development workstation: OpenJDK 17 with the headless JRE, the standard javac and java toolchain and mainstream build systems, with your source, dependencies and build output on infrastructure you own. It is a development environment for conventional software, not only a platform for AI workloads.

GoodSaphira is the development host. AI is an optional tool. The developer remains in control.

What javaDragon gives you

  • OpenJDK: compile and run Java with the standard javac and java toolchain.
  • Build systems: Gradle and Maven for project, dependency and release management.
  • A controlled workspace: your code, caches and artifacts stay on the machine you choose.
  • AI assistance on your terms: an agent can work with the toolchain locally, with access you grant.
GoodThe JDK is published in the hatched stream and installs with apk today, including the headless JRE for running server workloads. The packages page lists the full set.

The toolchain, not a black box

Saphira provides ordinary, capable Java tooling. It does not hide the JDK behind a proprietary interface or pretend that an agent writes your code for you. You compile, run and debug with the same commands you would on any Linux workstation, and the agent, if present, operates those tools with the permissions you give it.
